That is why Thurman describes the memoir as “a ‘bad’ book, with pictures of its author doing egregious things, embedded in a ‘good’ book- a work of literature.” But the “bad” and “good” of the book are inseparable, working together to form the memoir. Alison Bechdel describes her graphic memoir, Fun Home, as the story of “…how closeted gay dad killed himself a few months after came out to parents as a lesbian.” Although a widely celebrated and respected literary work, the memoir is controversial because of its inappropriate graphic images. In her article, “Drawn From Life”, Judith Thurman, a staff writer for The New Yorker, admits that “…Bechdel is anomalous…she illustrates her life’s most private moments, including some that most people wouldn’t want to share.” Bechdel portrays moments in her life-seeing a dead body, having sex, going through puberty-that may make people uncomfortable. ![]()
